Choosing the right facility

You should start looking into assisted living facilities before your parent is in need of one. While this may seem pessimistica bad omen predicting the futurein reality it is better to be prepared then caught off guard. What would happen if your elderly parent suddenly had a stroke and required assisted living, but you hadn’t taken the time to look into providers? Hospitals discharge patients relatively quickly even though they usually required extended nurse care, so it is important to be equipped with some knowledge on possible facilities. The first things you’ll want to do when choosing a nursing home is check the facilities accreditation and staffing. It is important to make sure a facility has the proper licensing and there are no violations or major complaints filed against them. Safety is of upmost concern when considering a nursing homefor both your parent and their possessions. Make sure there is enough staffing available and a doctor onsite or nearby in case of emergencies. To get a feel for the nursing home is really like try talking with residents and their guests. Visiting family members can provide valuable insight into what your experience with the home will be like and residents can answer questions about the food and accommodations. Also, be sure to ask for an activity calendar. Most homes should provide a weekly list of activities. Make sure there are fun interactive activities that will get your parents out from in front of the TVs in their rooms and into a more social environment. You’ll want to choose a place where you can see your parent, and more importantly, see yourself visiting. It’s hard for elderly people to accept that they can no longer care for themselves, don’t make it harder on them by not stopping by frequently and showing your support.
