Alzheimer’s Disease: Coping Help for Families
No one likes to think someone they love has Alzheimer, and when the initial diagnoses is given it is very stressful for family members. The future is now unknown and the course of the disease can be frightening for everyone involved. Fear, sadness and anger are things that the immediate family might feel. There might be several different options for the loved one and family members might disagree about should happen. Living with family, assisted living and skilled nursing care are things that might need to be discussed. It is important to sit down as a family and talk about the future and what everyone wants it to look like. Some may feel that staying at home is the best option and others will vote for assisted living with professional help. Both answers are right, but it is best to keep all options open because this is a constantly changing disease. Although the changes are slow, they are certain and there needs to be a healthy plan in place.
Assisted living is often the best option for the safety of the loved one. It is important to visit several different care facilities and include all the family members. They will be more receptive to letting the family member move into a care facility if they have visited and realize what a great and caring place it is. Most people are not aware of all the amenities and special care options that are available for Alzheimer patients. This is certainly a time for families to grow stronger and bond in a special way. Alzheimer is a part of life and not always the best diagnoses it is real and needs to be dealt with. It can be a special time of growing and taking time to show love and care for the whole family. It is a time to be drawn together.
